If you think having ESPN come to your high school to televise a game live is a tremendous thing, you need to talk with a school in California.
According to a story in the Sacramento Bee, ESPN was nothing but a pain when it televised the Folsom-Grant game last Friday.
Some interesting stuff in this story.
Lanny on high schools
Will there be "noooooooo doubt about it" in WPIAL football this year?
Lanny Frattare, the former play-by-play announcer for the Pittsburgh Pirates, will be announcing WPIAL football games this season. Frattare will do play-by-play for MSA Sports Network. MSA's games can be heard on numerous radio stations and also on the internet.
Frattare was a Pirates announcer for 33 years and retired in October of 2008. Most recently,he has been the faculty advisor to Waynesburg University's student-run radion station (WCYJ-FM).
"When I stepped away from the Pirates, I was hoping to continue to be part of the broadcast and sports communities of Western Pennsylvania, and have a chance to work with young people," Frattate said in a statement released by MSA. "My position as an assistant professor of communication at Waynesburg University affords me those opportunities, and now so too does this invitation to announce high school football. Western Pennsylvania high school football is sewn deeply into the fabric of our community, as is the MSA Sports Network. I look forward to sharing my Friday evenings with all my friends who are devoted to WPIAL football."
The MSA Sports Network web site is www.msasports.net.
Here is a story Bob Smizik did on Frattare when he retired two years ago.
WPIAL President Rich Constantine dies
Sad news in district high school sports. Rich Constantine, president of the WPIAL, passed away Saturday night from cancer.
Constantine has been involved with the WPIAL for more than a decade. But his involvment in high school athletics goes way back. A graduate of Uniontown High School, he made the Big 33 all-star game in 1965 and also was a state champion runner-up in wrestling. He played football and wrestled at the University of Virginia. He was a longtime worker in Uniontown schools. He served as a teacher, principal, head wrestling coach, assistant football coach and athletic director during his tenure.
Constantine did a lot of good for high school sports and will be missed.
