A sad story on the first night of the high school football season. One of the WPIAL's best players sustained a serious ankle injury.
West Allegheny's Mike Caputo, the Post-Gazette Player of the Year in 2009, is in the hospital after suffering a dislocated ankle in the first half of his team's game against South Park. A short while ago, West Allegheny coach Bob Palko confirmed the injury. The injury was serious enough that Caputo was taken from the field on a stretcher.
Palko couldn't give an answer on Caputo's status for the season, except to say in a text message, "we'll know more in the morning."
You hate to see any kid get hurt. But Caputo played with such a passion for the game that it was a joy to watch him play. He was so looking forward to having another big year.
The Post-Gazette did not have a reporter at the game. But fan John Pfab sent an email, saying he attended the game and Caputo was hurt while making a tackle.
This is all too remindful of another standout Pennsylvania player who suffered a dislocated ankle a few years ago and missed his senior year. It was LeSean "Shady" McCoy, when he was playing for Harrisburg Bishop McDevitt. McCoy, of course, went on to play at Pitt.
