If you thought it was ridiculous for the Pennsylvania high school football championships to be played a week before Christmas the past two years, get used to it because it will continue.
Earlier tonight, the PIAA Board of Control voted down a proposal that would have started football season one week earlier, and thus moved up the state championships a week. The proposal needed to pass three readings, and it passed one in December. But it was voted down, 19-12, tonight.
Under the proposal, football would start one week earlier than all other sports.
Now my opinion: I just can't figure out the Board of Control on this subject. I have talked to so many people the past two years from coaches, to players, to fans and the word I hear most often about the dates of state football championships is "ridiculous." For the past two years, the title games have been a week before Christmas. Pennsylvania is only one of a handful of states in the country to hold state championships so late. All of the others are in warm-weather climates, like Florida and Texas.
The PIAA Board of Control knows all these facts. I've talked to Board of Control members and they will say something needs to be done about the length of the season and the championship dates. Yet they do nothing about it. You try to figure it out.
Let the ridiculousness continue.

Joe D. - Nice post. Those were the days, brother. I got the lowdown from my dentist, who was a big time Pitt booster. Sherrill quit over that infamous lunch bill. In reality, he was breaking all the rules. Pitt administration had to get rid of him. I saw it first-hand. Some of those guys had some pretty decent set of wheels.
Mike - It'll never change. However, I throw this out on the table for you. I'm just curious if there is input from the PA State Department of Education. There maybe rules from those guys. The PIAA maybe acting under guidlines from the state on starting school activities in the summer. Any thoughts? Eleanor Chute may know something.

The reason why we don't start football earlier is the Eastern side of the state. The players all work at the shore and vacation there and don't want to comeback early. We should opt out of state and go back to 24 basketball games. They are only allowed to play 22 now thanks to PIAA football playoffs. Every WPIAL coach wants to start earlier or get out. Ask some of the coaches who win WPIAL titles and they will tell you that the toughest thing to do is get the kids up for a state playoff game in a high school field after playing at Heinz Field. As the say in Jersey... FORGET ABOUT IT!!!!

I went to the Shaler/OC basketball game. Shaler came back to win the game. OC lost the game because they missed free-throws. OC is great free-throw shooting team. Without having the stats, there are several girls in the 85%+ range hitting the foul shot. One girl was tired in the 4th quarter, she threw up an air-ball. Never seen that from a OC player.
OC went into the stahl with 4 minutes left in the third quarter. It turned out not to be a good move.
For once, Mozzetti actually coached a good game by using and maximizing his bench. He put C.J. Harris (9th grader) and Kate Potter into the game. Shaler does not have much of a bench. OC should have not have lost the game.
I've been to allot of basketball games. This game was probably one of the worst officiated game that I have seen in a long time. It was that bad for BOTH teams. Every so often, a no-call is a good call. However, be consistent about it. I wouldn't have wanted to see a foul shooting contest, but the officiating was bad, real bad.
I'm not blaming the bad officiating for the loss.

Who the heck is Javonte Pitts out of Woody?
J.Pitts and L.Pitts are visiting Pitt this weekend. Since the story on "recruiting"... there is an awful odor to this!!!!
Sounds like some sort of quid pro quo.. either to appease Woody coach or L.Pitts..
If I smell it all the way here in Jersey... I'm sure others do as well.

thedean - Nah. Disagree. If you're on vacation or working when you are in season, many coaches would view you as not committed to the sport. You can sit at the end of the bench or turn in your gear.
BTW, conditioning is done through-out the year. Once the weather gets better, teams are out on the track running as well as lifting weights.
I believe that it has something more to do with 16 teams making the WPIAL playoffs. I say cut that down to 8 teams. It would give the regular season a little more meaning. It would cut the season by 1 week. I'm sick and tired of the no. 1 team blowing out the no. 16 49-0 in the first round of the playoffs.
Like I've written before, the playoffs are a money maker for the WPIAL. There are ways around it. To generate more revenue, the WPIAL can add Saturday afternoon AND Saturday evening games. There are allot of people who would not mind attending multiple games. They could also get the best officiating for those games.

JoeD has no clue....Javonte Pitts was the most talented DB on a team that had 9 D1 players and has more NFL players then any school in the USA.
Wow I guess you cannot be related and BOTH be D-1 recruits...
I realize that 9 D1 players on a team is probably a novel concept to you but you certainly act like a Jersey resident...just because you state is a cesspool of corruption doesn't mean every place is.

According to Rivals... there are only 3 that have D1 offers!!! There are 2 other profiles with no offers... J.Pitts has no rating or no offers... why you ask.. because he is D2 at best!!

Lafayette Pitts committed to Rutgers. Last time I checked, Rutgers is located in ....... New Jersey.
Here's my take on it.
From what I've read here, this is an official visit for Lafayette Pitts. If he's made a committment to Rutgers, why the official visit to Pitt? I'm assuming Jevonte is his brother. If so, he's helping out his brother. If this is the case, make it an unofficial visit to Pitt. I have a twin brother myself. So, I'm cool with one brother helping another brother, except make it unofficial vs. official.

J Pitts another top Woody player ...
although his replacement on offense was something else ... Patrick Menifee ... Menifee made some tremendous plays ... wow ... great scrambling ability and very elusive ... kid looked like Michael Vick at times ....

HS football season until end of December is looong ....
could/should reduce WPIAL season one week ... could reduce nbr teams in playoffs and elim WPIAL first round playoff game, but need PIAA to get with the program ...

Ironman and Joe D. I always enjoy reading your comments and must admit you are generally SPOT ON with what you say. I am glad that there are people like you guys out there that share the same passion for High School sports.
With that being said. Lafayette Pitts is actually Jevonte Pitts' uncle if you can figure that one out.
The Olde ball coach for Woody High usually does not take to the Ironman style of football. He usually sticks to a 2-platoon style!! However at the beginning of this season he had his QB playing both ways. After CC beat them they made the switch that helped the team. Pitts was an average QB but a great DB. To my knowledge he does not have any Division I offers and I don't think he will be getting any either. Good High School DB's don't always get Division I offers!

vikings1 - Thank you for the post. Uncle. Did not know that one. I assumed brother. Thanks. I reread part of the articles in the past football season in the PG here from several months ago to gather intel on JP. JP was replaced by Menifee to concentrate on DB.

Woody was deep last season ... some players moved around to focus on offense or defense ...
domino effect began when L Pitts moved to offense (primarily) ... J Pitts moved to defense ... P Menifee then to QB ...
or something like that ...

Yeah I originally thought they were brothers but heard it through the grapevine that one was the uncle? I can't remember back to who was the uncle but think Lafayette was.
I know Central is loaded with guys back next year, but who else? I usually just follow them and go to there games! I know NA was senior dominated... Woody too, but they seem to always be around in the end when it counts the most!! Who will be NO.1 next year? I know thats far away.. but just a thought?

Central is returning virtually all its skill players such as Perry Hills, Damian Jones Moore, Luigi Lista Brinza, Louis Taglianetti, etc. I understand the OL was underclassman as well. They should be ranked no. 1.
NA was senior dominated. It didn't hurt when the two Kugler kids walked on campus.

Agree - Central looking very good for next season.
Agree - NA will lose a number of seniors, but they should be fine. The underclassmen will be hungry - they have been part of the success - and they know what was required to be successful (years of hard work and dedication).

Luigi is on the all name team. BTW, he played as a freshman. There's another Taglianetti at Oakland Catholic, a sister who plays basketball and can hit the 3 pointer.

The recruiting stories were legendary in 70's and 80's. JoePa hated Jackie Sherrill due to recruiting tactics.
I read/heard stories that when recruiting Dorsett, Sherrill slept many overnights on the Dorsett couch.
Back in the day, the Golden Girls were also deployed to assist in recruiting... giving the tours for the recruits, etc.
The Pitt Boosters were heavily involved in recruiting... giving "summer jobs", etc. I, like most others, got jobs working in the steel mills for the summer... Dorsett lounged at poolside at the Zernich pool as a "job". The Zernich's were 3 brothers... Quip grads, all 3 went to Pitt undergrad and med school, all 3 played sports at Pitt... were heavily involved in recruiting for Pitt in Beaver County.
But, back in the day, wpial had a high volume of quality, BCS, D1 players compared to these days... colleges from all over US were recruiting the rust belt.
